New Contract Role: Controls Engineer

Shape the Future of Heavy Machinery: Controls Engineer (12-Month Contract)

Are you an experienced Controls Engineer looking to take your technical expertise to the next level with a world-leading OEM? Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a talented engineer to join the Performance and Control Team at their Articulated Truck (ATK) facility in Peterlee, UK.

If you thrive in a fast-paced factory environment, love getting hands-on with industrial automation, and enjoy solving complex real-time system puzzles, this role is for you.

The Opportunity

In this agency position, you will support manufacturing controls systems, ensuring robust performance of production equipment through software support, diagnostics, machine tuning, and validation activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations Support: Deliver controls and software support for manufacturing operations.
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve equipment control system issues to minimize factory downtime.
  • System Optimization: Execute software updates, fault-finding, and continuous system optimization.
  • Testing and Validation: Support commissioning, testing, tuning, and validation of production machinery.
  • Process Improvement: Analyze production procedures to drive quality, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing and maintenance teams while maintaining precise documentation of code and system changes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in industrial control systems, automation, and embedded control systems.
  • Strong capability in fault diagnosis and root-cause analysis.
  • Hands-on approach within both manufacturing and proving ground environments.

Top Candidates Will Also Have

  • Experience with Off-Highway Trucks (OHT) or heavy machinery.
  • Familiarity with Caterpillar systems or equivalent OEM environments.
  • Solid understanding of J1939 CAN/Ethernet communications, sensors, actuators, and real-time systems.
