Controls Engineer – Automated Machinery
Location: South West England
An established engineering business is looking to appoint a Controls Engineer to join its growing engineering team.
The role will involve developing, testing, and commissioning control systems for a variety of bespoke automated machinery, working closely with colleagues across engineering and project delivery from initial design through to installation and customer handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop PLC and motion-control software for new automated machinery
- Work with electrical, mechanical, design, and project teams to develop appropriate control solutions
- Design and configure operator HMI systems
- Carry out machine testing and factory acceptance activities
- Install, commission, and troubleshoot equipment at customer sites
- Provide technical support to customers following installation
- Assist with fault finding and improvements to existing equipment
- Contribute controls expertise during the development and refinement of new machine designs
- Produce and maintain relevant control-system documentation

About You
You'll ideally have:
- A degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in electrical, electronic, controls, or automation engineering
- Practical experience developing control systems for automated or industrial machinery
- Experience programming PLCs using at least two major industrial automation platforms
- Experience with HMI development and machine communications
- Exposure to machine vision or other industrial sensing technologies
- Experience with motion control and servo systems
- The ability to fault-find electrical and control systems in a hands-on environment
- A full UK driving licence
- Flexibility to travel to customer sites, including occasional overnight stays

Desirable Experience
- Strong experience with a major PLC platform
- Experience with servo drives and coordinated motion
- Previous experience taking machinery from design through testing and commissioning
- Experience working on bespoke or low-volume automated equipment
This is a hands-on engineering position offering the opportunity to work on varied automation projects rather than repetitive production-line programming.
