Controls Engineer - Day Shift

A well-established manufacturing business in Lydney, Gloucestershire is seeking a Controls Engineer to join their engineering team on a day shift basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced automation or controls specialist who enjoys working across projects, upgrades, and continuous improvement within a modern industrial environment.

The Role

As a Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and support of PLC-controlled systems across the site. You'll work on projects from concept through to commissioning while also supporting fault-finding, upgrades, and safety improvements to keep production running efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Specify, program, modify, and test PLC systems (Siemens TIA Portal / Step7, Mitsubishi, Beckhoff).
  • Develop and maintain HMI/SCADA systems, data acquisition, alarms, diagnostics, and performance dashboards.
  • Design and implement functional safety architectures including safety PLCs, light curtains, scanners/radar, and machine interlocks.
  • Produce safety documentation including risk assessments, Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS), validation plans, and proof testing aligned with ISO 13849 / IEC 62061.
  • Troubleshoot complex faults across PLC, electrical systems, sensors, and communications networks.
  • Lead improvements to machine safety, throughput, and reliability including infeed systems, door interlocks, and safety zoning.

Requirements

To be successful in this role you will ideally have:

  • Proven experience with PLC programming and commissioning.
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal / Step7 and Mitsubishi GX Developer (Beckhoff TwinCAT advantageous).
  • Strong knowledge of Ladder Logic and STL programming.
  • Experience designing and supporting HMI/SCADA systems.
  • HNC or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Controls, or Mechatronics (or relevant experience).
