I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Working closely with colleagues across External Relations, communications, marketing, and the wider University, you will develop content from brief to final output, translating complex information into clear, compelling messages for different audiences. You'll apply ARU's Tone of Voice, use audience insight and personas to shape your work, and help colleagues communicate more effectively by providing practical guidance on content, messaging, and accessibility.
As part of a newly formed creative team, you will have the opportunity to help establish new ways of working, contribute ideas that improve content quality and consistency, and play a key role in developing the written expression of ARU's brand. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys combining creativity with attention to detail and who wants to make a visible contribution to a new university strategy.
We are looking for an accomplished writer with experience creating content for a range of audiences and channels. You will have excellent writing and editing skills, a strong understanding of how language shapes audience perceptions, and the ability to adapt your style to suit different purposes and platforms. You will also be highly organised, collaborative, and confident working with stakeholders to turn ideas and complex information into engaging content.
This is an opportunity to help define how one of ARU's most important assets, our voice, is expressed across the institution. If you are passionate about storytelling, audience-centred communications, and creating content that informs, engages, and inspires, we would love to hear from you.
