Corporate / Controllership Accountant

Type: Hourly Contract

Compensation: $80–$120/hour

Location: Remote

About the Opportunity

Mercor is collaborating with a leading AI lab to engage experienced Corporate and Controllership Accountants to help develop high-quality training data for AI systems. In this role, you'll translate real-world accounting and controllership workflows—including financial reporting, month-end close, bookkeeping, and core accounting operations—into structured scenarios and expert feedback that helps AI systems reason more effectively about professional accounting work.

Responsibilities

  • Design realistic accounting scenarios based on hands-on controllership experience.
  • Develop scenarios involving financial statement preparation, journal entries, and account and bank reconciliations.
  • Create practical month-end and period-end close scenarios.
  • Develop tasks involving fixed-asset and depreciation schedules, accruals, and prepaids.
  • Review and compare AI-generated accounting outputs for accuracy and GAAP compliance.
  • Evaluate AI outputs for sound professional accounting judgment.
  • Provide clear, actionable written feedback to improve AI performance on accounting and reporting tasks.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with the research team throughout the project.
  • Apply real-world accounting practices to help develop high-quality AI training data.

Required Qualifications

  • CPA certification or 3–5+ years of corporate, in-house, or public accounting experience.
  • Hands-on ownership of the general ledger and period-end close process.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Practical experience with financial accounting and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of core accounting operations.
  • Familiarity with common accounting tools such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, and Excel.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in an asynchronous environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience across financial accounting and reporting.
  • Background in bookkeeping or client accounting services (CAS).
  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, or payroll operations.
  • Strong controllership or corporate accounting experience.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing financial statements and reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with AI evaluation, training-data creation, or similar analytical projects.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be based in the United States.
