About The Post
Apprentice Opportunity – Help Shape the Future of the Trans Pennine Trail
Thanks to new Heritage Fund support, the Trans Pennine Trail National Office is looking to recruit an apprentice to join our small but busy team and help deliver an exciting new project: Preserving the Past, Enriching the Future.
This project will focus on celebrating, protecting and promoting the unique heritage of the Trans Pennine Trail, a free-to-access, 370-mile multi-user route used for walking, cycling, wheeling and, in some sections, horse riding. The Trail connects communities, landscapes, historic routes, former railway lines, canals, riverside paths, villages, cities and green spaces across the North of England.
The apprentice will support the TPT team with project development across South Yorkshire, helping us to engage local communities, volunteers, schools, partners and Trail users. This will include supporting heritage activities, community events, digital resources, accessibility improvements, volunteer development and promotional work linked to the project.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with an interest in heritage, the natural environment, accessibility, community engagement, active travel or outdoor spaces. The role will provide hands-on experience within a nationally significant green corridor, while helping to make the Trail more inclusive, accessible and sustainable for future generations.
What The Apprentice Will Support
The role will include opportunities to:
- Support community engagement activities, workshops, walks, webinars and events across South Yorkshire.
- Help collect and share stories, memories, photographs and information that celebrate the Trail’s natural, built and social heritage.
- Support the development of digital resources, including website content, downloadable guides, interpretation materials and accessible information for Trail users.
- Work with volunteers and partners to strengthen local engagement and help promote the Trail’s value to communities.
- Assist with communications, marketing and social media activity to raise awareness of the project and encourage more people to explore and enjoy the TPT.
- Learn about accessibility, inclusive outdoor experiences and how physical and digital information can help remove barriers for Trail users.
- Contribute to project monitoring and evaluation by helping gather feedback, data and evidence of impact.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Interested in heritage, outdoor spaces, nature, community engagement or active travel.
- Keen to learn and develop new skills in a supportive team environment.
- Organised, enthusiastic and willing to get involved in a varied project.
- Confident communicating with different people, including volunteers, partners and members of the public.
- Interested in making the Trail more accessible, inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
- Willing to support both practical project activity and digital/promotional work.

No previous specialist heritage experience is needed — this role is designed as a development opportunity, with training and support provided throughout. The project specifically aims to provide in-house training for someone with a keen interest in heritage and the natural environment, helping them gain transferable knowledge, skills and experience for future employment.
Why this role matters
The Trans Pennine Trail National Office is a small team responsible for the strategic coordination, promotion and development of the Trail. The Heritage Fund project will help increase our capacity, strengthen volunteer support, improve digital access, engage new audiences and build long-term sustainability for the Trail.
By joining us as an apprentice, you will play an important part in helping more people discover, understand and value the TPT — while supporting work that protects its heritage, improves access and creates a lasting legacy for communities across South Yorkshire and beyond.
