Job Description

The Corporate Banking Associate in UK Industrials is focused on Shipping, Logistics & Offshore clients. This is an intermediate-level professional role responsible for providing bespoke capital structure expertise and corporate finance advice to clients. The Associate will work alongside Senior Bankers in business origination and execution across Citi’s product set, with a particular focus on episodic and strategic financing transactions. The overall objective of this role is to deliver content and drive revenue by cross-selling the Citi platform, while efficiently deploying the firm’s capital and evaluating and managing risk.

The Role Encompasses

  • Opportunity to join a team with a strong focus on the Shipping, Logistics & Offshore industry and regional client base, delivering market-leading industry content and championing corporate finance initiatives.
  • The Associate will become an expert in the Shipping, Logistics & Offshore space, with exposure to multiple product specialists across Citi. They will also work closely with our Investment Bank and product partners, including Capital Markets (DCM, ECM, Acquisition & Project Finance, Leveraged Finance), Markets (Commodities, Derivatives, FX), Treasury & Trade Solutions (Trade Finance, Cash Management), and Corporate Finance/Lending teams.
  • Provide analytical support, risk assessment, and monitoring of existing and new relationships within the Shipping, Logistics & Offshore portfolio.
  • Develop strong client relationships and be recognised as a sector specialist by clients. The role involves significant direct client engagement at the CFO and Treasury level.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Senior Bankers to provide relationship management support to clients, alongside sector expertise.
  • Act as a core member of deal teams supporting the origination and execution of episodic and Corporate Finance transactions involving clients globally.
  • Stay abreast of market and industry trends, best practices, and the competitive landscape.
  • Conduct risk assessment and credit analysis of existing relationships, including periodic review of financial results and statements to monitor operating performance, liquidity, and financial condition, as well as peer analysis, industry trends/outlook, and preparation of financial projections and sensitivity analyses.
  • Day-to-day responsibilities include developing client pitch materials tailored to client needs, leading execution of episodic transactions/financings, and fostering ongoing client relationships.
  • Assist with day-to-day activities across cash management, trading initiatives, foreign exchange, loan activity, and debt and equity capital markets.
  • Evaluate public filings, research reports, operations, business plans, and financial forecasts to produce strategic and financial analysis.
  • Develop:
    • an in-depth understanding of business dynamics;
    • a clear understanding of clients’ priorities to identify appropriate opportunities; and
    • strong internal relationships with key product, risk, and regional partners.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong experience in a financing-focused role such as corporate finance/debt advisory, project finance, or capital markets/investment banking roles.
  • Ideally, prior experience in Shipping, Logistics & Offshore, or transportation and/or infrastructure asset classes.
  • Strong corporate finance mindset with a solid understanding of capital structure drivers.
  • Strong credit skills and experience executing episodic transactions.
  • Quantitative, accounting, and financial modelling skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience); MBA or Master’s degree preferred.

Competencies

  • Accounting and Corporate Finance expertise.
  • Counterparty credit analysis and risk assessment.
  • Understanding of legal documentation, including loan agreements and ISDAs.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a team-oriented environment with demonstrated leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong client relationships while balancing client needs and Citi priorities.
  • Self-starter with the ability to take initiative and follow through, exercising sound judgement on when to escalate.
  • Strong networking skills, maintaining close relationships with product and risk specialists.
