CAD Designer – Aspiring Engineer

(Position Scope & Job Description – ASR Group®)


About ASR Group®

The ASR Group® family of companies is the world’s largest refiner and marketer of cane sugar. We operate globally across North America and Europe, producing grocery, industrial, foodservice, and specialty sweetener products.

  • Sugar Refineries: North America: California, Maryland, Louisiana, Canada, Mexico Europe: United Kingdom, Portugal (and a joint venture refinery in Italy).
  • Additional Operations: Sugarcane farming and mills in Mexico and Belize.
  • Leading Brands: Domino®, C&H®, Florida Crystals®, Redpath®, Tate & Lyle®, Lyle’s®, Sidul®, Whitworths®, and Tellus® (single-use, compostable tableware made from plant fibers—including sugarcane).

Position Scope

The CAD Designer collaborates with Project Managers and Project Engineers to create, manage, and document project deliverables across the full project lifecycle. This includes:

  • Gathering project requirements
  • Preliminary and final design work
  • Cost budgeting and accounting
  • Scheduling (development and control)
  • Procurement of equipment and materials
  • Project monitoring and control
  • Commissioning and project closing

As part of this role:

  • You will maintain and update existing documentation and systems.
  • Develop, refine, and use 3D CAD models and point cloud (laser scan) data — particularly for design in brownfield environments:
    • Interpreting point cloud models
    • Assessing spatial constraints, interfaces, and facility layouts
    • Spatial validation for overlays and existing structures

Detailed Roles & Responsibilities

Core Technical Work

  • Prepare complex technical drawings, such as:
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
    • Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
    • Scaled equipment layouts
  • Update existing drawings to reflect modifications or system improvements.
  • Self-check and revise drawings for accuracy.
  • Perform field measurements as needed.
  • Conduct basic calculations (material volume, load, stress, etc.).
  • Scrutinize vendor design drawings for compliance with purchase specifications.
  • Compile purchase requisitions as necessary.
  • Participate in (or lead) equipment startup operations and troubleshoot maintenance problems under scope.
  • Direct contractors and internal labor during project implementation.
  • Maintain disciplinary organizational standards in:
    • Drawing files
    • Catalog and equipment records
    • Instruction books and technical documentation

Innovation & CAD Expertise

  • Develop AutoCAD 2D and 3D models to support project delivery.
  • Apply AutoCAD Plant 3D selectively, ensuring user-friendly, streamlined models per company standards.
  • Work with point cloud models to extract geometry and inform design layouts.
  • Assess spatial conflicts, project interference, and system overlays using laser scan data.
  • Simplify complex models into clear 2D deliverables for project teams and contractors.
  • Generate isometric drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs) aligned with Plant 3D outputs.

Additional Duties

  • Uphold neatness, accuracy, and professionalism in all assignments.
  • Stay informed on industry advancements, evaluate and propose new concepts/equipment to improve efficiency.
  • Perform any other relevant tasks as required by the department.

Essential Capabilities

Knowledge & Skills

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Proficient in AutoCAD and MS Project—fluent in both for industrial design.
    • Intermediate punctuality: Autodesk Plant 3D for piping design and isometric generation.
    • Internal process knowledge:
      • Strong understanding of GMP, SQF, NFPA, ANSI, and ASTM guidelines.
      • OSHA standards familiarity and working knowledge of PD5500 (mechanical inspection & testing).
  • Technical Focus:
    • Expertise in AutoCAD 2D and 3D modeling, clothing industrial applications.
    • Deep knowledge of piping systems, structural layouts, and mechanics in industrial environments.
    • Skilled in point-cloud data interpretation, including extracting engineering information and spatial awareness.

Essential Work Experiences

Required Skills

  • CAD & Design Drafting experience in industry (senior-level preferred).
  • Piping and mechanical system design expertise, including:
    • Conveyor systems (belt, screw elevators, bucket elevators)
    • Machine designs including material selection.
  • Laser scan / point cloud experience—working with data to develop brownfield layouts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Revit or BIM familiarity and project conditions.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
