About the Role
A unique finance and transformation leadership role with the opportunity to shape the future Bridgend County Borough.
Bridgend County Borough Council is entering an exciting new chapter.
With a settled and ambitious senior leadership team, cross party support for change and strong foundations across the organisation, we are looking for an exceptional leader to become our next Corporate Director - Transformation and Finance and fulfil the role of Section 151 Officer.
This opportunity arises following the retirement of a highly respected postholder who leaves the council's finances and corporate foundations in a strong position. Our financial stewardship is recognised as one of our strengths, supported by a technically capable and well-established finance team, a prudent approach to borrowing and investment, and a clear commitment to long term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
But this is not simply a finance role.
We are looking for someone who can operate as a strategic corporate leader across the whole organisation at the heart of our change programme. Someone who understands local government finance, but who is creative and can also see beyond the numbers to help shape services, unlock opportunities and drive transformation.
As Corporate Director, you will lead a broad portfolio spanning finance, audit, ICT, customer services and programme management and transformation. So, you won’t just have finance as an enabler of change you will have direct management of our programme of change with technology playing a central role. Through this you will support the Chief Executive driving our ambitious programme of organisational modernisation and continuous improvement, helping us redesign how we work, strengthen risk management and ensure we remain fit for the future.
You will lead the council's transformation agenda at a time of significant investment in digital capability, innovation and leadership development. From harnessing the opportunities presented by digital technologies and AI, to creating new ways of working and strengthening organisational effectiveness, you will help shape the future direction of the council.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will also oversee financial strategy and investment planning for some of the most significant regeneration opportunities in Wales. We are delivering major investment programmes across Porthcawl, Bridgend Town Centre and other key growth locations. Managing the financial framework that enables these ambitious developments to succeed will be a critical part of the role.
Unlike many councils, we have the capacity to think strategically about our future. Our prudent financial management has resulted in one of the lowest levels of borrowing in Wales, creating opportunities to invest, innovate and support sustainable growth. We are seeking a leader who can maximise those opportunities responsibly and creatively.
Requirements
This is a role for an individual who can combine technical credibility with political awareness, commercial thinking and transformational leadership. You will be equally comfortable advising Members on financial strategy, leading large scale change programmes, building organisational capability and developing strong partnerships across the region and beyond.
This is a role for an individual who embraces change and wants to work in a dynamic, fun and high performing corporate team, maximising our investments and help to lead us to a more business-like approach to risk management that encourages creativity through the organisation.
For the right individual, this role offers a genuine opportunity to broaden your corporate leadership experience. Working closely with the Chief Executive, Cabinet and senior leadership team, you will be at the heart of shaping the future of both the council and the county borough, gaining the breadth of experience that could position you for future Chief Executive opportunities.
Who We're Looking For
If you are a CCAB qualified finance leader with a track record of strategic leadership, organisational transformation and delivering change at scale, we would love to hear from you.
If you share our ambition, values and appetite for meaningful change, we want to hear from you.
