The Role
Referment is working with an independent law firm that advises businesses and individuals across Staffordshire and the West Midlands. Its corporate team works with a broad client base of SMEs and owner-managed businesses, and the firm is now looking for a solicitor to join that established team at its Dudley office.
In practice, much of your advice will go directly to the people who own and run the businesses, on the transactions and arrangements that shape how their companies are bought, sold and run.
You'll join an established corporate team and advise SME and owner-managed clients across its full mix of work:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- buying and selling businesses (M&A)
- shareholder agreements
- general company law
The client base is broad rather than concentrated in a single sector, so the work changes with each business you advise.
What We're Looking For
You'll be a qualified solicitor with genuine corporate experience, comfortable advising on M&A and shareholder agreements alongside the wider company law that surrounds them. The firm points to five or more years' PQE as a guide to the level of knowledge and experience likely to be required, but this is for reference only: it is not an entirely rigid requirement, and applications from other qualified fee earners with different levels of PQE are welcome.

Prior experience advising SMEs and owner-managed businesses would help you connect with this client base quickly, as would a preference for varied corporate work over a narrow specialism.
This could suit a corporate solicitor who wants to work closer to the businesses they advise, whether that means moving from a larger corporate team or bringing existing owner-managed client relationships from a regional practice.
