I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

More Generally
Handle any HMRC enquiries or investigations on behalf of clients. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Corporate Tax Manager or established corporate tax specialist looking for greater ownership, client contact and advisory exposure within an independent accountancy practice.
You will become a key point of expertise for corporation tax, taking ownership of a predominantly owner-managed business and small corporate group portfolio while working closely with colleagues across accounts, audit and the wider tax team.
This isn't intended to be a purely compliance-led position. Alongside overseeing corporation tax returns and computations, you'll have the opportunity to advise businesses on their wider tax position, identify planning opportunities and help clients navigate increasingly complex tax requirements.
The firm's existing corporate tax offering encompasses compliance and tax planning alongside areas including VAT, HMRC enquiries, international tax, transfer pricing, corporate interest restriction and cross-border tax matters, creating scope for genuinely varied work.
For someone who enjoys understanding the wider commercial picture behind a client's tax affairs, this represents an opportunity to become a trusted adviser rather than simply managing deadlines.
You'll also have the opportunity to contribute to how the firm's tax offering develops, identifying process improvements, potential new services and opportunities to provide additional support to existing clients.
Depending on your background and interests, there can also be exposure to wider areas including private client tax, VAT, CIS, international tax and transfer pricing.
