Job Summary
The Cost Accountant ensures robust control and accuracy of inventory and work-in-progress (WIP), while delivering insightful margin analysis to support profitability across our Sunderland manufacturing site.
Key focus areas:
- Maintaining accurate product costing in JD Edwards
- Monitoring stock movements and valuations
- Analysing cost and margin performance to identify risks and opportunities
- Collaborating with operations to provide cost insights
- Supporting FP&A activities and ad hoc business requirements
Working closely with operations and finance teams, this role ensures financial integrity while driving profitability improvements.
Responsibilities
The role includes (but is not limited to):
- Developing, maintaining, and reviewing standard costs for raw materials, labour, and overheads
- Preparing and analysing cost variances, including material, labour, overhead, and purchase price variance (PPV)
- Performing detailed margin analysis by product, customer, or production line to support profitability improvements
- Managing and controlling inventory accounting, including raw materials, WIP, and stock movements within JD Edwards
- Monitoring and reconciling work-in-progress (WIP), ensuring accurate cost capitalisation
- Leading inventory counts and cycle count processes, investigating discrepancies and driving corrective actions
- Supporting VAT returns preparation, ensuring compliance with UK regulations
- Partnering with cost centre owners to provide variance analysis, guiding spend control and budget adherence
- Supporting budgeting, forecasting, and FP&A activities, including manufacturing cost assumption development
- Utilising JD Edwards to extract, analyse, and report financial and operational data
- Providing timely financial analysis to address ad hoc business needs
- Driving process improvements, automation, and system enhancements in manufacturing and finance workflows

Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications
- CIMA/ACCA qualified, or part-qualified (equivalent preferred)
- Preferred but not essential: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance

Experience Requirements
- 5+ years in manufacturing or industrial environments (highly desirable)
- Cost/accounting/management accounting roles
- Experience in:
- Inventory and WIP control
- Standard costing and variance analysis (including PPV)
- Margin and profitability analysis
- Month-end processes
- ERP system use (JD Edwards preferred)
