Help us create a better future, quicker
SP Energy Networks is delivering more than £10 billion of investment into the GB electricity grid over the next five years, helping accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more secure energy future. A key part of this investment is the delivery of the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) HVDC project, a flagship joint venture between SP Energy Networks and National Grid.
As HVDC Cost Management Lead, you'll play a critical role in the financial management and successful delivery of one of the UK's largest and most strategically important energy infrastructure projects. Working at the heart of a complex joint venture environment, you'll establish and drive robust cost management processes, reporting frameworks and financial controls that support project delivery while contributing directly to the UK's journey to Net Zero.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of cost management standards, processes and reporting across the joint venture, ensuring accurate, timely and insightful financial information is available to support decision making.
- Oversee month-end reporting, cost forecasting, budget performance reviews and cash flow management, while providing expert financial guidance to project leadership and key stakeholders.
- Work closely with project management, commercial, regulation, treasury and finance teams across both ScottishPower and National Grid, maintaining oversight of project performance against budgets and regulatory requirements.
- Manage key processes including value of work done reporting, intercompany invoicing, cash calls, cost breakdown structures and forecasting activities, while proactively identifying risks, resolving cost-related issues and supporting both statutory and management accounting requirements.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
