Costs Draftsperson

Lawstop is seeking a numerate and detail-oriented individual with experience in a legal costs role to join our team as an In-House Costs Draftsperson. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate, timely, and efficient billing across a busy caseload.

You will be highly organised, with excellent attention to detail and a strong understanding of Legal Aid processes. You will be confident using case management systems and Microsoft Office applications. A proactive, self-motivated, and results-driven approach is essential, along with the ability to contribute to the development of efficient billing processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing and processing Legal Aid claims and inter partes bills
  • Drafting legal aid bills with accuracy and efficiency
  • Assisting with High Cost Case Plans (advantageous)
  • Completing post-assessment work and implementing assessment outcomes
  • Liaising with and advising fee earners and support staff on costs-related matters
  • Corresponding with third parties, including counsel and expert witnesses
  • Uploading claims to the Legal Aid Agency
  • Ensuring compliance with billing procedures and case management systems
  • Implementing recommendations from the Director following monthly reviews and ensuring timely action

Key Skills and Experience

  • Strong understanding of Civil Legal Aid billing procedures
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in legal aid billing or costs drafting
  • Experience as a Costs Draftsperson or Costs Lawyer (desirable)
  • Strong knowledge of Legal Aid Agency rules relating to costs
  • Excellent analytical and organisational skills
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Self-motivated, professional, and able to work independently
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office and experience with LEAP or similar case management systems
