The Government Legal Department is recruiting 1 Grade 6 Senior Costs Lawyer/Draftsperson and 3 Grade 7 Costs Lawyer/Draftspersons to join its specialist Costs Team.
This is an opportunity to work on costs matters arising from some of the Government's most significant and high-profile litigation.

The team deals with:
- Judicial Reviews
- Commercial Litigation
- Clinical Negligence
- Public Inquiries
- Employment
- Human Rights claims
- Land Tribunal matters
- Supreme Court litigation
The work is frequently complex, high-value and often unique in nature. Team members regularly appear before the Senior Courts Costs Office and the Supreme Court.
What's the difference between Grade 6 and Grade 7?
Both grades involve managing complex adverse costs, recovery and budgeting matters whilst providing specialist costs advice across Government.
The Grade 7 roles focus on managing significant costs caseloads and supporting the wider Costs Centre of Excellence.
The Grade 6 role carries additional responsibility for:
- Strategic leadership
- Team management
- Developing junior costs professionals
- Leading on complex and high-profile matters
- Shaping service delivery and capability across the team
