Help us support people through some of life’s hardest moments.
“I became a trustee after losing my elderly and vulnerable parents. The experience nearly broke our family. I want everyone in Greater Manchester to have the sort of emotional and practical support that Being There offers”
Heather Henry, Trustee since 2011.
Maybe you have personal experience of life limiting illness. Maybe you want to champion a local charity that is built from community and strengthens that community. Maybe you’re looking for more purpose and meaning in your life. Read on…
For over 40 years, Being There has stood alongside people in Greater Manchester living with cancer and other life‑limiting illnesses. With a turnover of over £400, 000, we operate 5 branches offering emotional support, counselling, respite sitting, transport to medical appointments, social groups and practical help — delivered by a small, dedicated staff team and more than 200 enthusiastic volunteers. It’s not easy, despite our great reputation. We have the usual struggles for funding, and operational challenges.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
