Role Overview
We are recruiting a Counter Sales / Yard Operative to join The Landscape Centre. This is a hands-on customer-facing role supporting the day-to-day operation of the sales counter and yard. The successful candidate will assist trade and retail customers, process sales and orders, provide product advice, maintain stock and yard standards, and help ensure materials are safely prepared for collection or delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome and assist trade and retail customers at the sales counter and in the yard.
- Provide helpful and accurate advice on landscaping products, building materials, tools and associated supplies.
- Process customer enquiries, quotations, orders, payments and account queries accurately and efficiently.
- Promote the full range of landscaping products, including paving, slabs, blocks, aggregates, decorative stone, fencing, timber and associated products.
- Pick, check, load and prepare customer orders for collection or delivery in line with company procedures.
- Assist with the safe loading and unloading of vehicles, using appropriate manual handling techniques and equipment.
- Work closely with transport, sales and administration colleagues to ensure orders are accurate and delivered or collected as agreed.
- Support stock management activities, including stock checks, replenishment, product availability and the safe storage of materials.
- Maintain the yard, warehouse, trade counter and surrounding areas to a clean, organised and professional standard.
- Operate forklifts and other yard equipment where trained and authorised to do so.
- Handle customer queries and complaints professionally, resolving issues promptly or escalating them where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records of sales, stock movements, customer orders and deliveries using company systems.
- Support the team with general branch duties during busy periods and provide cover across the counter and yard when required.
- Comply with company policies and procedures, including health and safety, manual handling, vehicle and yard safety, data protection and customer service standards.

Person Specification
- Previous experience in counter sales, yard operations, warehouse work, builders’ merchanting, landscaping supply or a related trade environment is essential.
- Knowledge of landscaping products, building materials or associated trade supplies is essential.
- Friendly, approachable and customer-focused, with the ability to build positive relationships with trade and retail customers.
- Confident communication skills and the ability to understand customer requirements and provide practical product advice.
- Accurate when handling orders, pricing, stock information and customer details.
- Organised and able to manage competing priorities in a busy counter and yard environment.
- Practical and physically able to handle and move landscaping and building materials safely.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and carrying out active yard-based duties.
- Willing to learn about the company’s products, services and systems.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use email, point-of-sale systems and stock or order management software.
- Forklift or counterbalance licence is desirable, although training may be provided for the right candidate.
- Good understanding of workplace health and safety and a commitment to maintaining safe working practices.
- Reliable, punctual and willing to support colleagues across the sales counter, yard and delivery operation.
- Full driving licence is desirable.

Working Hours, Salary And Benefits
⏰ Working hours are Mon - Fri 07.30 - 17.00, plus 1 in 2 Sat 08.00 - 12.00
