Bailiff - Cambridge County Court

Location: Cambridge County Court and Family Court, Cambridge, CB1 1BT

Job Summary

As a Bailiff, you will be at the forefront, dealing with individuals during some of the most challenging moments in their lives.

About Us

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice, supporting the legal system across England and Wales. We aim to ensure justice works for everyone, protecting the vulnerable and upholding our fundamental rights and freedoms.

Your Role

If you have excellent customer service skills, prefer working away from an office, enjoy working alone or in a small team, and like varied and flexible days, then working as a Bailiff may be the job for you.

To be successful, you will need to be an excellent communicator, able to swiftly assess circumstances, adapt accordingly, and be a confident leader in emotionally charged situations. You must be able to calmly explain your presence and the options available to help resolve matters. You should demonstrate empathy for court users, be non-judgmental, and be focused on carrying out your role while respecting those you meet.

This role offers full training, including on Court Management systems, and mentoring from experienced staff. It is not to be confused with private bailiffs. This role provides the opportunity to make a difference within HMCTS and develop your career within the Civil Service.

You can use your own car or, following successful completion of your probation period, a lease car (UK driving license required for a lease car). Fuel allowances are paid. You will receive full PPE and safety training. You should be familiar with using IT and comfortable with receiving training on the court's case management systems.

Working Hours

  • Standard full-time working hours: 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)
  • Flexible approach: HMCTS operates a flexible approach to working hours to suit both individual and business needs.

Travel Requirements

While the post holder will be based at Cambridge County Court and Family Court (CB1 1BA), there will be a requirement to work flexibly across Cambridgeshire and at other local HMCTS sites, including Peterborough Combined Court Centre, Crown Buildings, Rivergate, Peterborough, PE1 1EJ. Regular travel to this location will be required. Travel time and associated expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with HMCTS policies and procedures.

Skilled Worker Visa

From 22 July 2025, the Government increased the salary threshold and skills level for Skilled Worker visas. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for sponsorship in accordance with the current immigration rules if you are applying for a Skilled Worker Visa for the first time.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
