Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Laboratory - ATOC 357

Course Description:

Students will gain hands-on experience in several fundamental atmospheric and oceanic science topics through practical experimentation. A diverse set of experiments will be conducted, ranging from in-situ observations in Montreal, to remote sensing of clouds and radiation, to laboratory chemistry and water-tank experiments. As a background for these experiments, students will receive training on sensor principles and measurement error analysis, as well as the fundamental physical processes of interest in each experiment. They will learn to operate, and physically interpret data from, various sensors for in-situ and remote observation of meteorological variables. Their training will also extend to operational weather observations, analysis, and forecasting.

Job Description:

Class lectures are 3 hours a week for 13 weeks per term.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Prepare formal lectures and lead class discussions on the topics of: In-situ observations in Montreal, remote sensing of clouds and radiation, laboratory chemistry and water tank experiments.
  • Operate and physically interpret data from various sensors for in-situ and remote observations of meteorological variables.
  • Administer tests and examinations in conformity with McGill regulations.
  • Mark assignments and tests and submit final grades online using McGill systems.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a PhD in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, or a related field.
  • Must have prior experience teaching this course at McGill or relevant teaching experience at a university or college level.
