Course Description
EDEC 221-001/002. Leadership and Group Skills
Description: Management, effective team leadership, group dynamics, and communications skills crucial for leaders. Discussion of mainstream intercultural, Indigenous, international, and institutional practices and leadership skills.
Term: Winter 2027
Course Credits: 3
Location: Education Building (EDUC 216)
Schedule: Wednesday & Friday, 11:35 am-12:55 pm
Appointment Dates: December 21, 2026 - April 30, 2027
Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs)
Education:
- Master educator with a graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. educational leadership, leadership studies, educational studies, organizational behaviour, management, social movements, group dynamics).
- PhD or equivalent in a relevant field is an asset (In exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master's degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered).
Experience:
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- A wide range of diverse leadership theories and approaches;
- Theories and philosophies about adult learning and group dynamics;
- Analysis and application of organizational factors (culture, structure, change, and development) on leadership practice and group behaviour.
- Effective interpersonal communication techniques, including active listening, feedback, non-verbal communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation strategies.
- Adult learning theories and team dynamics theories.
- Practical experience working with diverse groups, including in intercultural or Indigenous contexts, and integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into leadership practices.
- Experience facilitating group discussions and resolving interpersonal conflicts within teams.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in leadership roles within non-school, educational environments such as non-profits, government agencies, and/or private sector organizations.
- Demonstrated success teaching similar/related course(s) to adult learners in traditional or non-traditional educational settings and/or equivalent relevant teaching or professional experience.

- Must be available to attend course coordination and planning meetings in advance of course start date.
