Course Details
Course code and title: EDES 304. Educational Techniques for Planning and Assessment
Description: Exploration of the roles of planning and assessment in teaching and learning with attention to the Quebec context, culturally responsive assessment, the impact of technological advancements such as generative AI, backward design, writing learning objectives, assessment for, of, and as learning, differentiated planning practices, and the creation of assessment tools. This course is not Team Taught or offered online.
Term: Winter 2027

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs)
Education:
- Master educator with a minimum completed MA degree in a relevant field (e.g., curriculum and instruction, educational assessment, secondary education). PhD preferred.
- Strong grounding in theories of teaching, learning, and assessment in secondary education contexts.
- Teaching degree and certification, or equivalent.

Experience:
- Expert knowledge of:
- The Québec Education Program (QEP), including competencies and evaluation frameworks at the secondary level.
- Principles and purposes of educational planning and assessment, including assessment for, of, and as learning.
- Backward design and the alignment of learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment.
- Writing clear, measurable learning objectives and success criteria.
- Design and use of a range of assessment tools.
- Differentiated planning and assessment practices to support diverse learners.
- Culturally responsive and equity-oriented approaches to assessment.
- The impact of digital tools and generative AI on assessment design, academic integrity, and student learning.
- Experience designing and implementing curriculum, unit plans, and assessment strategies in secondary school or teacher education contexts.
- Experience supporting teacher candidates or students in developing planning and assessment practices (e.g., lesson/unit planning, assessment design, feedback strategies).
- Experience as a teacher/instructor in the Quebec educational system is an asset.
Other:
- Knowledge of the impact and proven record of integrating pedagogical approaches anchored in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Familiarity using myCourses, Zoom, and/or other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences.
- Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools.
- Familiarity teaching blended classes.
- Instruction in this course may be delivered remotely if indicated as required by the university.
