EDTL 628. Advanced Methods in Teaching Mathematics in Secondary School.
Description
Teaching of mathematics including the development of a comprehensive understanding of conceptual and procedural mathematics. Teacher role, strategies, problem solving, student thinking, evaluation, and mobilization of digital technologies, using Quebec Ministry of Education professional competencies for teachers.
This course is not Team taught or offered online.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs)
Education
- Master educator with a minimum completed master’s degree in a relevant field. PhD preferred.
- Teaching degree and certification, or equivalent.
- Strong grounding in mathematics education theory, curriculum, and pedagogy at the secondary level.
Experience
- School-based mathematics teaching experience in secondary schools, preferably in Quebec.
- Experience supporting teacher candidates in teacher education and/or mathematics methods course contexts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- The Québec Education Program (QEP), including competencies, progression of learning, and curriculum expectations relevant to secondary mathematics.
- Advanced pedagogical approaches for teaching mathematics that support conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, problem solving, and mathematical reasoning.
- Student thinking in mathematics and approaches to eliciting, interpreting, and responding to learners’ mathematical thinking.
- Planning, instructional, and assessment practices relevant to secondary mathematics teaching.
- The role of the teacher in facilitating mathematical discourse, inquiry, and meaningful engagement with mathematics.
- Integration of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning.
- Professional competency frameworks and professional repository documentation relevant to teacher education.
