Cover Supervisor Portsmouth Secondary Schools

Reeson Education is recruiting confident Cover Supervisor candidates to support secondary schools across Portsmouth. This Cover Supervisor opportunity is particularly suitable for experienced school support staff, graduates, youth workers, sports coaches and others who are confident supervising groups of secondary-aged pupils.

A Cover Supervisor steps into lessons when the regular classroom teacher is absent and supervises work that has already been prepared.

The Cover Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a productive learning environment rather than carrying out full teacher-level planning and assessment.

Responsibilities of a Cover Supervisor

The Cover Supervisor Will

  • Supervise KS3 and KS4 classes.
  • Introduce the work that teaching staff have already set.
  • Make sure pupils understand instructions.
  • Keep pupils focused and on task.
  • Maintain classroom routines.
  • Apply the school's behaviour policy consistently.
  • Manage transitions between activities.
  • Work across different secondary subjects.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures.
  • Report relevant information to teaching staff.

What We're Looking For in a Cover Supervisor

Previous experience as a Cover Supervisor is welcome but is not always essential.

A strong Cover Supervisor will be confident communicating with teenagers, able to establish boundaries and comfortable managing a classroom without having to teach new subject content from scratch.

Candidates progressing from Teaching Assistant work may find the Cover Supervisor position a useful next step towards greater classroom responsibility.
