Durham Lifting is a UK-based engineering specialist providing lifting systems, high-capacity load testing, and material handling solutions for heavy industrial environments.
Established in 1996 and operating from the historic Britannia Test House in Middlesbrough, the company combines heritage engineering expertise with modern heavy-load testing infrastructure. The site, originally built to test steel components for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, is one of the UK’s most significant heavy testing facilities.
Durham Lifting offers its clients a first-class service, breakdown and LOLER examination service to ensure its equipment is fit for use, and maintained to a high standard for continued use. As well as lifting equipment sales and hire, LOLER inspection, repair, refurbishment, crane servicing, upgrades, and specialist wire rope services. Through ongoing investment in equipment, facilities, and skills, the company remains at the forefront of lifting engineering and safety-focused load testing services in the UK.
Role Description
The Crane Service Manager is a full-time, on-site role based in Middlesbrough, responsible for managing crane servicing operations and ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant lifting solutions for clients.

Day-to-day, this role plans and schedules crane inspections, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, coordinating service teams and resources to meet project deadlines and customer requirements. The Crane Service Manager provides technical support and advice and monitors job progress, reviews service reports, and ensures adherence to relevant standards and regulations, including LOLER and other statutory compliance frameworks.
The role involves working closely with the team to ensure engineers are supported with technical queries and are able to support breakdowns, and fault finding on overhead cranes. Liaising with clients to understand technical needs, provide quotations, and resolve operational issues. The Crane Service Manager also contributes to continuous improvement of service processes, supports training and development of technicians, and maintains accurate documentation for quality assurance, certification, and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
- Experience in crane servicing, Repairs, maintenance, and inspection, with a solid understanding of lifting equipment, load testing, and material handling systems.
- Knowledge of relevant standards and regulations (e.g., LOLER, PUWER, health and safety legislation) and a strong focus on safety, risk assessment, and compliance.
- Proven skills in planning, scheduling, and coordinating field service activities, including managing teams, contractors, and resources in an industrial environment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, service manuals, and engineering documentation, with sound problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Strong communication and customer service skills, able to build relationships with clients, provide clear technical explanations, and manage expectations.
- Competence in report writing, record-keeping, and use of digital tools or software for job tracking, documentation, and data management.
- Relevant technical qualification or apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline; crane or lifting-specific certifications are an advantage.
- Experience in heavy Lifting, Vessel craneage, and site testing
- An understanding of AI and its development and how it can be used to progress the division
- An open-minded approach to modern systems, development, and AI.
