The Opportunity:
We are looking for two part-time CRC Evening Assistants to join our friendly and welcoming Research Services team within Heritage Collections. This is a fixed-term position for 12 months and is based at the Centre for Research Collections, within the Main University Library, on the central George Square campus.
The CRC Evening Assistants will work 4 hours per week, on either a Tuesday or a Wednesday, 3pm-7pm.
This post is designated for the purposes of student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated University of Edinburgh student for the duration of your employment.
The University of Edinburgh is committed to providing a positive employment experience for all students. To support students in combining work with studies, we strongly advise you don’t exceed the University’s recommended number of working hours per week;
- 15 hours for undergraduate students (up to 35 hours during vacation)
- 15 hours for postgraduate taught students (all year round)
- 9 hours for postgraduate research students (all year round)
Please note, these recommendations apply to the total number of hours you are employed across all posts.
What the job involves:
- Providing a front-line service to users of the University’s Heritage Collections at the Centre for Research Collections, including invigilation of the reading room and daily closing routines.
- Providing introductions for new users, including registration, catalogue searches, and guidance on rules and procedures.
- Giving excellent customer service while offering face-to-face and online help and information to users. Resolving user queries where possible, passing on those which require more specialist help.
- Ensuring the safety and security of Heritage Collections material when handling, collecting, and reshelving reader requests, adhering to the Operational Manual.
- Keeping an accurate track of issues for consultation of Heritage Collections material and providing accurate statistical information on the use of Heritage Collections material

- Demonstrable experience of delivering high-quality customer service in a front-line role.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Accurate and methodical, with the ability to be flexible and to deal with problems as they arise.
- Approachable and able to support users to feel confident when accessing collections for the first time.
- An interest in the University’s heritage collections.
- A commitment to supporting Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in the workplace.
