Creative Director
Cherwell Collective is currently recruiting a Creative Director for our Waste Innovation Station Headquarters (WISH) project, supporting social and climate resilience building in Oxfordshire.
On-site in Kidlington: WISH (OX5 1EE) and Latimer House (OX5 1GG) Part-time (0.8 FTE), grant-linked role through November 2028 Up to £17 per hour based on experience, up to 30 hours per week
Facilitates climate literacy building county wide through overseeing creation of educational materials, both physical and digital, and an annual line in the Sustainable Fashion Show at Blenheim Palace. The individual is not expected to physically create all materials themselves but to oversee and co-create with a wide variety of artists and freelance content creators.
OVERVIEW
The postholder directs, produces, and delivers WISH creative activities repurposing waste. The Creative Director works directly with volunteers and the public to share their skills and knowledge and the WISH creative space. These include:
- Physical exhibits
- Community workshops
- Digital tutorials
- Website and social media content
- Kits for sharing
The goal is to inspire people to repurpose/repair at home and build a broader movement.
The Creative Director is also responsible for overseeing the creation of a company fashion line, repurposing waste in collaboration with multiple partners each year, to be displayed at the Sustainable Fashion Show at Blenheim Palace. Direct leadership is expected to guide volunteers, log deliverables, and complete risk assessments around activities.
Responsibilities and duties
Direction
- Manage a large and varied volunteer staff, taking personal preferences/abilities into account in assigning weekly duties and providing essential information to volunteers.
- Oversee the creation of a 5-item fashion line for our annual fashion show.
- Oversee WISH exhibit creation as needed, including permanent and travelling demonstrations.
- Organise and run workshops repurposing waste for the public and support volunteers to lead those whenever possible.
- Assess risks involved in specific tutorials and activities to support broader and safer use of our resources.

Creation
- Create tutorials and content to guide people in repurposing waste.
- Draw or oversee the drawing of graphics consistent with our branding to form part of educational outreach.
- Make and support in creating products for the WISH storefront with the help of creative volunteers.
- Update records on types and quantities of materials used to aid in a better understanding of the climate impact of our work.
- Write a blog post and debrief for each collection that you coordinate.
Collaboration
- Upload materials to our website and manage content in coordination with the Marketing and Communications lead, including creating content for social media, writing blogs, etc.
- Act as a credible and honest spokesperson/public face of Cherwell Collective and WISH.
- Attend and support our large events, which may include 4 Saturdays per year.
- Coordinate with broader staff for event and activity timelines to ensure coherent delivery (For example, you are not expected to recruit volunteers, but if you need specific skills for an upcoming activity, you will be expected to communicate with the administrator as soon as possible so they can recruit while you plan the activity.)
Essential Skills
- Creativity and proven experience repurposing waste items
- Proficiency in Google Suite (Sheets, Forms, Docs, Gmail, etc) or Microsoft equivalent
- Willingness to further train as needed (skills, software, and regulations)
- Ability to work independently as well as with others.
- Organised, decisive problem-solving and good time management skills, good oral and written communication skills.
- Flexible and resilient

Desired Qualities
- Previous team management experience
- Direct experience with Cherwell Collective - Cherwell Larder, Climatarian Kitchen, Harvest@Home or partner organisations
- Understanding of confidentiality laws and GDPR guidelines.
- Experience with Canva and illustration programmes like Illustrator or Procreate
- Experience with volunteer teams
- Has a creative portfolio
- Experience making clothing or textiles with a sewing machine
Deliverables

Planning Fashion Collaboration
You will be given some incomplete designs and sketches of fashion ideas when hired. We have partners who are making some accessories as well. We expect by September 1st for you to have a 5-piece line planned in cooperation with partners and incorporating anything that is salvageable from the materials provided. We have multiple textile artists and seamstresses available to support your creation.

Have 5 pieces made and fitted to models ready for September 29th

Exhibits
Have permanent exhibits ready for display in the WISH building and travelling exhibits ready for taking to new hubs. You will be provided with materials and content to support this project.
