Credit Controller
Location: Derby, England, United Kingdom
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-time
About the Opportunity
A leading international industrial and manufacturing organisation is seeking a Credit Controller to join its Central Finance team.
This role will play an important part in protecting cash flow and managing customer accounts across multiple UK operations, with additional support provided to group entities across Europe. The position will oversee the full credit control cycle, from customer account setup and credit checks through to debt collection, dispute resolution, cash allocation, and reporting.
The successful candidate will work closely with customers and internal stakeholders to maintain accurate financial records, manage credit risk, and support the wider finance function. There will also be opportunities to contribute to process improvements and strengthen transactional finance controls.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Control & Debt Management
- Monitor customer accounts and ensure outstanding balances are collected within agreed terms.
- Proactively follow up on overdue payments and maintain accurate debt records.
- Identify and escalate high-risk or long-outstanding accounts.
- Negotiate payment arrangements where appropriate.
Customer Account Administration
- Set up new customer accounts and complete required documentation and credit checks.
- Review and maintain customer credit limits.
- Ensure customer master data remains accurate and up to date.

Query Resolution
- Investigate and resolve invoice disputes, short payments, and account discrepancies.
- Work with customers and internal teams to resolve outstanding queries efficiently.
- Provide invoices, statements, and supporting documentation as required.
Cash Allocation & Ledger Management
- Allocate customer payments accurately and promptly.
- Reconcile bank postings and customer accounts.
- Maintain accurate customer ledgers.
- Support month-end close activities and provide debtor analysis.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Prepare aged debt reports and highlight areas requiring attention.
- Support debtor performance monitoring and cash flow forecasting.
- Identify opportunities to improve finance processes and controls.
- Contribute to initiatives designed to improve efficiency, accuracy, and credit risk management.
Requirements
- Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Confident communication skills with the ability to build effective customer and internal relationships.
- Comfortable handling challenging conversations and negotiating payment arrangements professionally.
- Good IT literacy, including Microsoft Office.
- Familiarity with finance or ERP systems.
- Previous experience in credit control or a similar finance position is desirable, but not essential.
- Strong administrative and communication skills.
- An interest in developing further finance knowledge or pursuing a recognised accounting or credit management qualification, such as CICM, is advantageous.
