Credit Controller - Law firm
Salary up to £58,000
3/2 hybrid working
City of London based
We are currently recruiting for an experienced WIP & Credit Controller to join a professional services environment. This role will support the effective management of WIP, debt and cash collection, helping to minimise financial exposure and maximise cash flow.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and manage WIP, identifying aged and high-risk balances and escalating issues where required.
- Support initiatives to reduce aged WIP and improve WIP conversion.
- Manage a portfolio of clients in line with established debt collection procedures.
- Work closely with Partners and Fee Earners to resolve outstanding WIP and debt.
- Provide accurate commentary on expected receipts, risks and barriers to collection to support cash forecasting.
- Monitor residual client account balances alongside bills and recommend appropriate action.
- Prepare monthly exposure reports, highlighting WIP, debt and working capital issues.
- Carry out account reconciliations, client analysis and ad hoc financial reporting.
- Assist the Cashiers team with obtaining remittances and advising on payment allocations.
- Recommend appropriate escalation, including formal debt recovery, settlement or write-offs.
- Identify trends and potential risks, making recommendations for appropriate action.
- Build strong working relationships with Partners, Fee Earners, clients and internal finance teams.

- Previous Credit Control experience within a law firm is essential.
- Strong understanding of WIP, debt management and cash collection.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-management skills.
- Confident dealing with Partners, Fee Earners and clients at all levels.
- Proactive, organised and systematic, with strong attention to detail.
- Able to identify financial risks and recommend practical solutions.
- Comfortable working independently while collaborating closely with senior finance colleagues.
- Basic understanding of AI tools and their application in the workplace.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
