Department Overview
Nomura’s Credit Risk Exposure Management team is responsible for:
- Quantification, risk management, and mitigation of contingent counterparty risks arising from the bank’s financing and derivative portfolios.
- Management of collateral and contingent risk across all businesses and asset classes.
- Provision of Internal Approval (IA) processes and stress loss metrics quantifications for OTC derivatives and Securities Financing Transactions (SFT) trading with hedge funds and counterparties.
The team works closely with Front Office and Market Risk, ensuring the firm's exposures remain within risk appetite.
Additionally, the team owns the Potential Exposure (PE) model and advises on:
- Bottom-up stress loss metrics
- All risk-related matters
Role Description
Primary focus: Provide quantitative support to the Credit Risk Management Team, with a primary focus on the hedge funds business.
Key responsibilities:
- Client pre-trade risk analysis
- Approval decisions for financing and OTC trades, including IA amounts for OTC transactions, haircuts for SFT transactions, and stress loss limit impact calculations for hedge funds.

Monitoring & analysing client portfolios
- Regular assessment of credit exposures (CE, PE, EE), risk profiles, and margin levels.
- Provide commentary on drivers and daily moves in exposure risk.

Margin model development & enhancement
- Participation in methodology adjustments and documentation of existing models.

Risk management of collateralized transactions
- Portfolio analysis using metrics such as credit risk, Value-at-Risk (VaR), stress scenarios, and liquidity events.
- Ensure accurate reporting for firm-controlled portfolios.

Regulatory compliance
- Application of rules from applicable regulatory bodies (JFSA, PRA, BaFin, SEC) on regulatory credit risk exposure and capital calculations.
- Ensure correct implementation across trade portfolios.

Cross-functional collaboration
- Work with various risk managers and stakeholders to address increasingly specific analysis requests.

Process automation & optimisation
- Automate, standardise, and simplify risk management processes to enhance efficiency and concentrate on risk analysis and mitigation.
Skills, Experience, Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential:
- Broad expertise in a range of asset classes and derivatives.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Understanding of client business motivations.
- Advanced Excel skills (expert level).
- Basic knowledge of current macroeconomic trends.
- Self-driven, motivated individual with a learning mindset.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in Prime Brokerage, Market Risk, or Exposure Management divisions.
- Experience in fixed income derivatives and cash products.
- Programming skills (e.g., VBA, SQL, Python).
- Additional financial education, such as a CFA or MBA.
