Credit Underwriter
Central London based
Up to £50K basic
My client is a well-backed growing Fintech with large-scale ambitions to disrupt the SME lending landscape in the UK. They are well-capitalized from their international lending arm and have been able to utilize systems, AI & Automation to launch competitively in the UK.
After launching 18 months ago, they have doubled lending expectations and have a brilliant reputation amongst brokers for speed of delivery.
They have a simple but effective SME loan product up to £500K & have product expansion plans in 2027...
Key Responsibilities
- Assess loan applications using internal scorecards, credit bureau data, bank statement analysis, and affordability models
- Evaluate income, cash flow, liabilities, and risk factors
- Make approve/decline decisions within mandate
- Recommend conditions or structured offers where appropriate
- Identify fraud indicators and escalate when required
- Ensure lending decisions align with credit policy and risk appetite
- Maintain strong portfolio quality and acceptable default rates
- Monitor early arrears trends and feedback into underwriting improvements
- Escalate complex or borderline cases appropriately
- Adhere to regulatory requirements (e.g., responsible lending, affordability, KYC/AML)
- Maintain complete and accurate case documentation
- Support internal and external audits
- Provide feedback on credit policy, decision rules, and automation opportunities
- Support testing of new underwriting models and rule changes
- Contribute to improving turnaround times while maintaining risk standards

Looking for:

- 2+ years underwriting experience (consumer or SME lending)
- Strong understanding of credit risk fundamentals
- Experience analyzing bank statements and credit reports
- Knowledge of affordability assessments
- High attention to detail
- Strong decision-making ability
- Comfortable working with data and credit systems
