Crystallisation Scientist / Senior Crystallisation Scientist

Sandwich, Kent
Contract
6-12 months temporary contract, with potential extension
SRG are working with an innovative pharmaceutical materials science organisation to recruit a Crystallisation Scientist or Senior Crystallisation Scientist to join their growing team in Sandwich.
About the Role
The successful candidate will support the development and optimisation of crystallisation processes for pharmaceutical materials, working on projects covering process selection and development (including filtration/drying) and particle engineering, and deploying a contemporary workflow comprising of both data-rich experiments and modelling tasks. Depending on experience, responsibilities may include leading project workstreams, mentoring colleagues and acting as a technical point of contact for clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute crystallisation experiments including both traditional approaches and emerging techniques such as co-processing, co-precipitation and sonocrystallsation.
- Develop scalable isolation and drying approaches, considering filtration, washing and manufacturability requirements.
- Apply solid-state characterisation techniques including XRPD, DSC/TGA, FTIR/Raman and microscopy.
- Utilise PAT tools where appropriate, such as FBRM, Blaze and in situ Raman, to build process understanding and control strategies.
- Analyse experimental data and provide scientific recommendations to internal teams and clients.
- Prepare technical reports and deliver presentations and project updates.
- For senior-level appointments, lead client-facing projects, define experimental strategies, mentor junior scientists and contribute to capability development.

Key Requirements
Scientist Level
- BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience developing and optimising crystallisation processes within a pharmaceutical, fine chemical or related industrial environment.
- Understanding of crystallisation fundamentals, including nucleation, crystal growth, supersaturation and solid form control.
- Experience using solid-state characterisation techniques such as XRPD, DSC/TGA, FTIR/Raman and microscopy.
- Experience designing, executing and interpreting laboratory experiments to support process development.
- Strong problem-solving, data analysis and communication skills.
Senior Scientist Level
- PhD (or equivalent industrial experience) in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Extensive experience developing crystallisation processes for pharmaceutical or chemical products, from early-stage development through to scale-up considerations.
- Strong grounding in pharmaceutical solid-state science and crystallisation (thermodynamics/kinetics, nucleation/growth, phase behaviour) and the link to particle attributes.
- A solid understanding of emerging particle engineering technologies.
- Proven ability to independently design experimental strategies, interpret complex datasets and provide technical recommendations.
- Experience leading projects, interacting with clients or stakeholders and mentoring junior team members.

Desirable Experience
- Crystallisation modelling, simulation or population balance modelling, using for example packages such as DynoChem or gPROMS.
- Process Analytical Technology (PAT) experience, including FBRM, Blaze, Raman or related techniques.
- Statistical analysis, Design of Experiments (DoE) and Bayesian optimisation.
- Scale-up, technology transfer or manufacturing support activities.
- Experience with data science and visualisation tools such as Python, JMP, Spotfire or Power BI.
