I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess at least 5 years of professional software development experience, with a proven track record in building low-latency, high-frequency, or performance-critical systems. Strong C++ development skills are essential, ideally complemented by commercial experience in Java. Candidates should have hands-on experience with the FIX protocol within electronic trading environments and a solid understanding of networking protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, and multicast.

Expertise in Linux, including multithreading, sockets, IPC, and system-level behavior, is required. A good understanding of concurrency, memory management, and in-memory optimization techniques is vital. Knowledge of NUMA architectures and performance-focused programming practices will be advantageous. Familiarity with Python, SQL, and relational databases is also desirable, as these skills will support broader system development and data processing tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop high-performance matching engines, FIX gateways, and electronic trading applications that meet stringent latency and throughput requirements.
  • Build low-latency, multithreaded systems utilizing C++ and Java, ensuring robust and scalable performance under high load.
  • Process real-time market and trading data through highly available and resilient systems, maintaining data integrity and timeliness.
  • Develop efficient in-memory data structures, lock-free queues, and circular buffers to optimize system performance.
  • Work with networking technologies such as TCP/IP, UDP, multicast, and other protocols to facilitate rapid data exchange and connectivity.
  • Identify and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks, profile applications, and implement optimizations to enhance system efficiency.
  • Support automated testing, DevOps practices, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to streamline development workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with trading, product, and infrastructure teams throughout the development lifecycle to ensure alignment with business objectives and technical standards.
