Job Overview

The Senior Radiographer (CT & MRI) is an autonomous practitioner responsible for delivering a high-quality, patient-centred diagnostic imaging service across Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The post holder will undertake a wide range of specialist and complex examinations, including trauma, emergency, cardiac, paediatric and interventional procedures, ensuring safe and effective care in accordance with professional, legal and regulatory requirements.

Working as a senior member of the Radiology team, the post holder will provide expert clinical support, supervision and guidance to radiographers, assistant practitioners, support workers and students. They will act as a key point of reference within CT and MRI, contributing to service improvement, clinical governance, quality assurance, education and workforce development.

The role includes participation in a seven-day service and out-of-hours/on-call rota, requiring independent decision-making and prioritisation in environments where direct access to senior clinical support may be limited. The post holder will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across the Health Board to deliver safe, efficient and responsive diagnostic imaging services that support patient pathways and organisational objectives.

Main duties of the job

• Perform and independently manage a wide range of specialised CT and MRI examinations, ensuring high standards of patient care, image quality and radiation/MR safety.
• Assess, prepare and monitor patients before, during and after examinations, adapting techniques according to clinical condition, individual needs and diagnostic requirements.
• Evaluate imaging requests, review relevant clinical information and, where appropriately authorised, undertake justification of examinations in accordance with IR(ME)R regulations and local protocols.
• Work autonomously during core, extended-hours and on-call periods, prioritising urgent and emergency workload and escalating significant findings in line with departmental procedures.
• Administer contrast media and other approved medicines in accordance with competency, training and local policies, responding appropriately to adverse reactions and medical emergencies.
• Supervise, support and mentor radiographers, assistant practitioners, support staff and students, contributing to education, competency assessment and professional development.
• Participate in quality assurance, audit, equipment testing, clinical governance and service improvement activities to maintain safe and effective service delivery.
• Contribute to the day-to-day organisation of CT and MRI services, supporting operational performance, patient flow and achievement of national and local targets.
