Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The successful candidate will work primarily within our retail shop, providing excellent customer service, assisting with the day-to-day running of the store and ensuring customers have a positive experience. There may also be occasional opportunities to provide support within the café next door, assisting customers and supporting the café team when required.

Key Responsibilities:

Customer Service:

  • Welcome customers into the shop in a friendly and professional manner
  • Provide helpful and polite customer service
  • Listen to customers' needs and assist them with their enquiries
  • Deal with customer questions and requests appropriately, seeking assistance from colleagues or a manager when required
  • Help maintain a welcoming, clean and well-presented shop environment

Till and Payments:

  • Process customer purchases accurately using the till
  • Accept cash and card payments
  • Provide customers with receipts and the correct change where applicable
  • Follow company procedures for handling payments and cash
  • Develop an understanding of basic till and payment procedures

Stock and Shop Duties:

  • Replenish shelves and ensure stock is displayed neatly
  • Check stock levels and report low or missing stock to the appropriate member of staff
  • Assist with deliveries and putting stock away safely
  • Help maintain attractive and well-organised displays
  • Check that products and shelves are clean, tidy and appropriately presented
  • Support general housekeeping duties within the shop

Occasional Café Support:

  • When required, the apprentice may provide additional support within the café next door, including:
    • Welcoming and serving café customers
    • Taking customer orders
    • Processing payments
    • Clearing and cleaning tables and customer areas
    • Supporting the café team with general duties
    • Maintaining good standards of customer service and cleanliness

What you'll learn

Course contents:

  • Use a range of questioning skills, including listening and responding in a way that builds rapport, determines customer needs and expectations and achieves positive engagement and delivery.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, along with summarising language during face-to-face communications; and/or Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate communication skills, along with reinforcement techniques (to confirm understanding) during non-facing customer interactions.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use an appropriate ‘tone of voice’ in all communications, including written and digital, that reflect the organisation’s brand.
  • Provide clear explanations and offer options in order to help customers make choices that are mutually beneficial to both the customer and your organisation.
  • Be able to organise yourself, prioritise your own workload/activity and work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate patience and calmness.
  • Show you understand the customer’s point of view.
  • Use appropriate sign-posting or resolution to meet your customers needs and manage expectations.
  • Maintain informative communication during service recovery.

Training schedule
Customer Service Practitioner Level 2. The apprentice will be allocated with an assessor who will visit them within the workplace once every 6-8 weeks. In addition, the apprentice will be required to attend online lessons once a month.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade D/3)
    • Maths (grade D/3)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
