About the Role

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a busy retail environment while working towards a Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship with Babington.

You will work alongside an experienced team, developing your customer service, communication, retail and organisational skills. You will gain practical experience supporting customers, operating tills, replenishing stock and helping to maintain a welcoming and well-presented store.

As a Customer Service Apprentice, your responsibilities will include:

  • Welcoming customers and providing friendly, helpful and professional service.
  • Responding to customer questions and helping customers find products around the store.
  • Developing your knowledge of the products available and providing appropriate guidance to customers.
  • Operating tills and processing customer purchases accurately using cash and card payment systems.
  • Supporting customers with queries and complaints, escalating more complex issues to your supervisor or manager.
  • Replenishing stock and ensuring shelves are well presented and appropriately labelled.
  • Checking product dates and supporting good stock rotation.
  • Assisting with stock counts and maintaining accurate stock levels.
  • Helping to keep the shop floor, tills and customer areas clean, tidy and welcoming.
  • Following company procedures relating to Health & Safety and Food Hygiene.
  • Working positively with colleagues to provide a high standard of customer service.
  • Taking part in training, coaching and development activities throughout the apprenticeship.
  • Completing your required off-the-job training and apprenticeship work during paid working hours.

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Use a range of questioning skills, including listening and responding in a way that builds rapport, determines customer needs and expectations and achieves positive engagement and delivery.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills, along with summarising language during face-to-face communications; and/or
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use appropriate communication skills, along with reinforcement techniques (to confirm understanding) during non-facing customer interactions.
  • Depending on your job role and work environment: Use an appropriate ‘tone of voice’ in all communications, including written and digital, that reflect the organisation’s brand.
  • Provide clear explanations and offer options in order to help customers make choices that are mutually beneficial to both the customer and your organisation.
  • Be able to organise yourself, prioritise your own workload/activity and work to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate patience and calmness.
  • Show you understand the customer’s point of view.
  • Use appropriate sign-posting or resolution to meet your customers needs and manage expectations.
  • Maintain informative communication during service recovery.
