Who We Are
Looking for a career where you can make a difference every day?
At Network Rail, we keep Britain moving. We operate, maintain and develop the railway infrastructure that connects millions of passengers and businesses across the country.
As a Customer Service Assistant, you'll be the face of Network Rail at the station, providing outstanding customer service, supporting passengers throughout their journey, and helping to keep the station safe and welcoming for everyone.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, thrives in a dynamic environment, and takes pride in delivering exceptional service. In return, you'll join a team that values diversity, supports personal development, and offers opportunities to build a long-term career within the rail industry.
Together, we're putting passengers first and creating a railway that people can rely on every day. Are you in?
About The Role
"No rail experience? No problem. We're looking for people with the right attitude and transferable skills. We'll provide the training, support and development needed to help you succeed and build a long-term career with Network Rail."
As a Customer Service Assistant at Birmingham New Street, you'll be at the heart of one of the busiest and most exciting railway stations in the UK. Every day, you'll help thousands of passengers travel safely, confidently and efficiently, delivering excellent customer service while playing a vital role in the safe operation of the station.
No two days are the same. Whether you're providing travel information, assisting customers during disruption, carrying out security duties, or helping passengers navigate their journey, you'll be making a real difference to people's experiences.
You'll spend much of your time on the station concourse, engaging with customers, monitoring activity, conducting security searches and maintaining a visible presence across the station. This is an active role that involves being on your feet for most of the working day and covering significant distances throughout the station environment.
Safety and security are at the forefront of everything we do. Through comprehensive training and support, you'll develop the skills and confidence needed to identify potential risks, respond appropriately to incidents and help ensure everyone gets home safe every day.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
