Customer & Service Excellence Industrial Placement - Mortgages
If you're ambitious, curious and enjoy working with people, our Customer & Service Excellence Industrial Placement provides an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience while exploring a future career in banking.
Help deliver brilliant experiences for customers and intermediaries while developing the skills and confidence to shape your future career.
Whether you're interested in customer service, commercial insight or understanding how businesses operate, this placement offers the opportunity to build practical skills while contributing to meaningful business outcomes.
The experience is designed to help you build confidence, apply your learning and gain valuable insight into how customer and intermediary experiences are delivered. Along the way, you'll broaden your network, work with experienced professionals and discover where your interests might take you after university.
Looking for a rewarding career in banking? Good things this way.
Where you’ll be working
You'll join our Mortgages function within the Intermediaries and Partnerships team, supporting the experiences of brokers, customers and business partners across Nationwide.
Working alongside experienced colleagues, you'll gain exposure to customer service, decision-making, market insight and relationship management while developing an understanding of how customer and intermediary needs help shape better outcomes.
Location
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, based at our London office.
RESPONSIBILITIES
What you'll be doing on the Customer & Service Excellence Industrial Placement - Mortgages
Our Customer & Service Excellence Industrial Placement is a 12-month programme designed to combine practical experience, professional development and real workplace learning. This isn't a placement spent watching from the sidelines. From day one, you'll contribute to meaningful work while receiving the support needed to learn and grow.
Your placement begins with induction, development support and structured learning designed to help you settle in, build confidence and understand the role you'll be performing. Alongside this, you'll join a 10-month collaborative project with other Industrial Placement students from across Nationwide. Throughout the placement, you'll gain hands-on experience while following a personalised learning pathway tailored to your role. Workshops, simulations and on-the-job learning will help you continue developing your skills and confidence.
The placement offers an opportunity to experience how customer service, market insight and business relationships contribute to successful customer outcomes. Rather than focusing on a single specialism, you'll gain broad experience and develop a better understanding of where your interests and strengths lie.
No two days are the same. Activities could include supporting brokers with mortgage enquiries, reviewing applications, helping resolve customer or intermediary issues, analysing market trends and customer feedback, and contributing to improvement projects.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
