Cyber Subject Matter Expert
Location: Defence Cyber Academy, Shrivenham / Hybrid
Reporting to: Programme Lead
Direct Reports: None
Security Clearance: SC Clearance Required
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Cyber Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the development and delivery of high-quality cyber security training within the Defence environment.
This is an exciting opportunity for a cyber professional with strong experience in Cyber Threat Intelligence, Detection Engineering, Cyber Operations, systems and networks to apply their technical expertise to the design of realistic, operationally relevant training.
You will play a central role in translating complex cyber concepts, threats, technologies and operational processes into structured learning materials, practical exercises, simulations and assessments aligned to Defence requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Course Design & Development
- Support the development of cyber security engineering courses covering threat detection, infrastructure, systems and networks.
- Translate operational requirements and threat intelligence into clear learning objectives, modules and assessment criteria.
- Contribute to Training Needs Analysis (TNA) activities and identify required cyber and threat intelligence competencies.
- Review and assure course content for technical accuracy, relevance and Defence alignment.
- Support course development in accordance with Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) principles.

Cyber Threat Intelligence & Detection
- Apply practical experience of cyber threats, adversary TTPs and detection engineering to training development.
- Integrate MITRE ATT&CK, threat intelligence and real-world attack scenarios into learning activities.
- Develop realistic case studies, scenarios and practical exercises covering cyber detection and response.
- Use hands-on knowledge of systems, networks, SIEM, EDR and logging/monitoring technologies to ensure training reflects operational environments.

Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with Defence Cyber Academy instructors, DSAT practitioners, course designers and other subject matter experts.
- Provide specialist technical input into course reviews, governance and assurance activities.
- Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across complex MOD environments.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
