Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Mid Essex Mental Health Support Team (MHST) as a Children and Young People Psychological Trainee (CYP-PT) for Systemic Family Practice with Conduct Disorder and Depression (CDD) as part of the NHS England funded Programme.
This is a unique opportunity to undertake a nationally recognised postgraduate training programme while gaining valuable clinical experience within an NHS Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). The post combines academic study at King's College London (KCL) with supervised clinical practice delivering evidence-based interventions to children, young people and their families.
The CYP-PT programme is designed to expand the specialist children's mental health workforce and improve access to evidence-based psychological therapies. NHS England funds both the trainee salary and university training costs for the duration of the programme.
This is both an employment and training post. Successful applicants should be prepared to manage the demands of postgraduate academic study, independent learning, clinical practice, supervision and assessment requirements throughout the training year.
Please see the attached job description and person specification for more information about this role and working at North East London NHS Foundation Trust. We encourage you to refer to this when completing your application.
About Us
The Essex MHSTs are committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based mental health support to children, young people and families. We are passionate about developing our workforce and providing training opportunities that support professional growth while improving outcomes for local communities.
We value diversity, inclusion, compassion and innovation and welcome applications from candidates who share these values.
This post is based within Mid Essex; however, the service operates across a large geographical area. Successful applicants will be required to travel independently to a range of settings in the community and schools across Mid Essex, as well as attend teaching at King's College London, Denmark Hill Campus, South London.
Due to the size of the area covered and the limitations of public transport in some locations, access to a car and the ability to travel independently for work purposes is essential. Applicants should ensure they can meet the travel requirements of both the clinical placement and the university-based training programme before applying.
Training Information
This full-time training will begin in January 2027 with around 2.5 days a week for academic work (teaching and personal study), and 2.5 days based at the service seeing clients related to training assignments.
Trainees will be both an employee of the service and an enrolled student with King's College London. Upon successful completion, qualified trainees will receive a KCL Postgraduate Diploma.
Please note that teaching will take place at King's College London, Denmark Hill Campus, South London, and successful candidates must be willing and able to travel to London throughout the training year.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Important Information: NHSE Two-Year Funding Rule
Applicants should be aware that individuals who commence an NHSE-funded course listed on the NHS England Psychological Professions Training Programmes webpage will normally be required to wait two years from the date of their qualifying exam board before they can start another NHSE-funded training programme.
This means that recent graduates of NHSE-funded programmes will not normally be eligible to commence the CYP-PT Therapy PGDip programme until two years have elapsed from their qualifying exam board date.
Applicants should also consider the impact of this rule on future training opportunities. For example, trainees commencing CYP-PT Therapy training in January 2027 would typically qualify in April 2028 and would not normally be eligible to begin another NHSE-funded training programme until two years after this date.
Exceptions may apply where extenuating circumstances exist. For further information, applicants should review the NHSE guidance and contact if required.
The Following Programmes Are Exempt From The Two-year Rule
- Children's Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP)
- Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP)
- CYP-PT Supervision PGCert
- Senior Wellbeing Practitioner PGDip
- Leadership PGCert
Fixed-Term Training Contract
This post is offered as a 12-month fixed-term training contract and is dependent upon the successful completion of both the employment and academic requirements of the programme.
As this is a combined employment and training role, trainees are required to maintain satisfactory progress on the King's College London CYP-PT Therapies Postgraduate Diploma and meet all academic, clinical and professional standards throughout the training year.
Please note that if a trainee withdraws from the university programme, is unable to continue their studies, fails to meet the required academic or clinical standards, or is removed from the course by the university, this may affect their ability to continue in employment. In such circumstances, the Trust reserves the right to terminate the fixed-term contract before the scheduled end date, in line with Trust policies and procedures.
Candidates should carefully consider the demands of balancing postgraduate study, independent learning, clinical practice, assignments, examinations and portfolio requirements before applying. Successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate the commitment, resilience and organisational skills necessary to complete the programme.
