CNWL Brent and Harrow Mental Health Support Teams are recruiting for an exciting opportunity to join one of these teams as a CYP_PT CBT Therapy Trainee. This is part of the NHS England (NHSE) funded Programme in partnership with Anna Freud, and Kings College London and UCL.
The post-holder will be training on the Children & Young People Mental Health (CYP-MH/CYP IAPT) Therapy Course and carrying out clinical work in our service to complement their studies and use their newly developed skills. We are seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic mental health practitioners to work and train within our service.
The training post will equip the post-holder to provide interventions for children, young people or families using evidence-based intervention consistent with the course they are attending.
This is a fixed-term appointment for the period specified. Completion of the contract does not, by itself, guarantee renewal or further or permanent employment.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidates would be working within CNWL Mental Health Support Team – Brent or Harrow.
The MHST works with young people age 5 - 18 with mild to moderate mental health presentations attending school/education settings.
The purpose of the team is to:
- Provide evidence-based interventions for mild to moderate mental health issues.
- Support the senior mental health lead in each education setting to introduce or develop their whole school or college approach.
- Give timely advice to school and college staff, and liaising with external specialist services, to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education.
The role will involve clinical work in school settings as appropriate to meet the requirements for the training course.
The post holder would attend MHST team meetings, group and 1:1 supervision and be part of the team.

Job Purpose
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a training role within the Child and Young Persons Improving Access To Psychological Therapies Programme (CYP-IAPT – Anna Freud/UCL) The post-holder will work within the CAMHS Early Intervention MHST service (NHS, Local Authority or voluntary sector) providing therapies whilst undertaking a programme of training in an evidence-based therapy for this role. This intensive training post will equip the postholder to provide evidence-based interventions based NICE Guideline recommended treatment and on CYP-IAPT core principles of accessibility, accountability, participation, awareness and evidence-based practice to provide an inclusive and effective service for children and young people. The post holder will work in the service for at least 2.5 days of the week using the newly developed skills whilst training for the remaining days.
The post holder will hold an appropriate training case load for the course and work with Children Young people and families with different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities and inclusive, non-discriminatory practice.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
CLINICAL
- With the assistance of their clinical supervisor accept appropriate referrals.
- Assess clients for suitability for the treatment for which training is provided.
- Make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the department’s referral protocols, and refer unsuitable clients on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary.
- Formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programmes for clients in line with their training modality and experience.
- Involve family members and others in treatment as necessary, conveying therapy formulations with sensitivity in easily understood language.
- Adhere to an agreed activity contract relating to the number of client contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per week in order to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient. This will reflect their part-tome work within the host trust or service.
- Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate.
- Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service.
- Keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols
- Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.
- Assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
Normally a minimum of a second-class Bachelor’s degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a relevant academic subject (e.g. Psychology, Education, Childhood Development, Social Work OR any subject with further training or experience in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, nursing, health visiting; social-work, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, special needs teaching, psychiatry, other psychotherapy, counselling and low –intensity therapies).
Desirable criteria
Previous experience of working within a CBT framework Previous experience of CAMHS and community based working.
Knwoledge
Essential criteria
Knowledge and understanding of issues relating to risk and safeguarding children and young people.
Desirable criteria
Knowledge and understanding of CBT theory and its application.
Experience
Essential criteria
Relevant experience of working with children / young people in a mental health setting. Experience of assessing and managing risk and safeguarding issues. Experience of multi-agency and/or multi-disciplinary working and liaising across internal & external agencies.
Desirable criteria
Previous experience of working within a CBT framework and/or using CBT informed interventions. A year or more experience working within a CBT framework and/or using CBT informed interventions (e.g., PWP, CWP, EMHP and Parent Trainer).
Skills and Ability

- Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with children, young people, and their families, whilst considering social differences.
- Ability to maintain a reflective stance in emotive/challenging interactions with children and their families.

- Capability to complete academic work at postgraduate diploma level, including IELTS or equivalent to the appropriate level for students with English as a foreign language (Level 2).
