Medical Laboratory Associate (MLA) - Cytology at IDEXX

As a Medical Laboratory Associate (MLA) in the field of Cytology at IDEXX, you will be a key contributor at one of the largest veterinary diagnostic companies in the world. You will perform laboratory testing that helps veterinarians diagnose and treat pets. The work is fast-paced and hands-on, with real opportunities to grow. This is a full-time permanent role (37.5hrs/week) with competitive benefits.

Why This Role Matters

IDEXX reference laboratories are a global network built on one shared goal: better pet care. When you prepare a smear or stain a slide, you're giving our pathologists what they need to reach a diagnosis. That work moves a sick pet one step closer to the treatment plan they need.

In This Role

  • You will be working as a Cytology Laboratory Scientist/MLT, performing laboratory analyses and tests that are vital for the diagnosis of our clients' animals
  • You will use automated analysers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform tests that support veterinarians in diagnosing animal illnesses, injuries and diseases
  • You will culture for microbiology, prepare smears of fluids, and stain slides
  • You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests, and for reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)

What You Will Need To Succeed

  • BSc in Biology/Biomedical Science/Animal Science/Zoology or equivalent
  • Experience working in a laboratory, including setting up, running and reading lab tests
  • Experience operating laboratory equipment (microscopes and/or clinical diagnostic analyzers) would be a plus
  • You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues
  • You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely
  • You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility
  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including standing or sitting for extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and specific vision requirements (close, color, depth perception)
  • This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
