Dacorum Borough Council declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) in 2019 and is committed to supporting a borough-wide response. A key pillar of this work is the development of Dacorum Climate Action Network (DCAN), a community-led network aimed at supporting residents, groups and organisations to take local climate action.
We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic individual to lead the development of DCAN, enabling it to become a self-sustaining, community-embedded, high-impact initiative. This role is key in delivering the DCAN initiative and will lead on engagement, communications, events, and showcasing climate related projects throughout the borough. This role is hybrid, with a requirement to work from The Forum, Hemel Hempstead and attend community events in Dacorum Borough, a minimum of two days a week, to be determined with the manager. Some out of hours working may be required.
Key responsibilities include public engagement, communications, reporting, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The ideal candidate must be equipped with excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills. In addition, the ideal candidate must have the experience and expertise to move projects forward and support change across communities and our organisation. The role manages and supports projects, campaigns, and initiatives that take place both within the council and in the community. The ideal candidate will need to be comfortable working in a team, maintaining various relationships, and meeting deadlines in a political environment. The purpose of the role is:

- To lead the development, growth, embedding, and mobilisation of the Dacorum Climate Action Network (DCAN) into a self-sustaining and representative community network.
- To be responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating a programme of engagement activities, communications and partnerships that support the aims of Dacorum CAN.
- To support delivery of the Council’s CEE Strategy through proactive external engagement, promotion and support of community-led climate action.
- Produce reports and present findings to senior management and councillors to update on Dacorum CAN activities within the Borough. Attend, write reports, and present to committees as required.
- To lead on communication activities in relation to the Council's efforts to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.

What is Local Government Reorganisation?
The Council is going through a major change as part of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and devolution. This means that the district and borough councils in Hertfordshire will be replaced by a smaller number of new unitary councils.
The aim is to make local government simpler and more efficient, improve services for residents, and bring decision-making closer to the communities we serve.
What This Means For You
If you join Dacorum Borough Council between now and 31 March 2028, you will move to a new organisation on 1 April 2028. Your role will transfer to the new authority, but the way you work and who you report to may change.
