Area of Interest: Data Analytics

Business Area: Corporate and Institutional Banking

Short Description: Turn data into insight that helps shape decisions, improve experiences and drive change

About the business area

Corporate and Institutional Banking helps some of the world’s largest companies grow and succeed by offering investment and financial solutions. Working across markets, sectors and borders, you’ll help deliver the insight, connectivity and support that enable clients to navigate change and unlock new opportunities

Who you are

You’re a logical, research-minded problem-solver who enjoys working with complex data and turning it into insight. You’ll thrive if you’re analytical, resilient, adaptable and confident communicating your thinking clearly. You’ll need strong quantitative skills, programming ability, research capability and the judgement to work with data in a fast-paced environment. Experience in at least one object-oriented programming language is required, along with expertise in one or more areas such as machine learning, stochastic calculus, optimisation, numerical analysis, forecasting or Monte Carlo simulation. You don’t need to know everything about HSBC or every market product before you join, but you should be ready to apply advanced quantitative thinking from day one. Required qualifications: a Master’s or PhD in a mathematical or quantitative subject, plus an independent research project such as a Master’s thesis or PhD.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What you'll do

You’ll work with colleagues in Markets, including Trading, Sales, Structuring and Quantitative teams, to turn data into insight. You could research and interpret information from financial statements, economic indicators, market trends and news, then help turn that into reports, visualisations and trade ideas. You may support traders with data collection, reporting and record-keeping, monitor market performance, and help assess risks and opportunities. You’ll also build tools and models using Excel, VBA or Python, and learn to use platforms such as Bloomberg, Reuters and HSBC tools. It’s a hands-on role where you’ll work closely with market specialists and build a clearer view of how data supports decisions in fast-moving markets.

What you'll learn

You’ll build specialist quantitative and markets knowledge through regulated training where needed, a global graduate induction and tailored role-specific development. Across two six-month rotations in Markets Front Office, you’ll deepen your understanding of quantitative finance, market dynamics, automation and customised trading systems. You’ll strengthen your ability to work with data, code and mathematical models in a live business context, while also building stakeholder management skills across teams, countries and cultures. Training on industry tools and exposure to front-office environments will help you connect technical expertise with commercial decision-making. By the end of the programme, you’ll have a stronger grasp of where Markets is heading—and how your quantitative skills can help shape it.
