I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

In year two, you will join a different Internal Audit delivery team to further develop your audit and data skills. This experience will deepen your understanding of Nationwide and show how evidence and insight support robust audit conclusions.
The final year includes a short secondment in another area of the business, followed by a return to Internal Audit to take on greater responsibility and prepare for a potential future Principal role.
No two days are the same. Activities could include analysing data, reviewing processes and controls, meeting stakeholders, discussing findings with an audit team and developing data insights that support audit conclusions.
Modern technology will be an important part of the experience. Depending on your work, this could include using Databricks, Python, SQL and AI-enabled audit solutions to investigate complex risks, generate insight and support better decision-making.
The programme develops highly transferable skills in analytics, audit, stakeholder management, data, communication and problem solving. Its varied, project-based pace combines structured audit delivery, stakeholder commitments and ongoing learning. A professional audit qualification is included, alongside hands-on technical data training throughout the programme.
