About Mecsia
Mecsia is a leading UK provider of technical inspection, maintenance, and engineering services. Mecsia has grown and continues to grow through acquisitions, and currently operates approximately ten legal entities, each with distinct systems and processes.
The Business Data Analyst is a contractor role supporting Mecsia's data & analytics programme, reporting to the Group CIO.
The data warehouse initiative started in 2025 and, working with a 3rd party, Mecsia has established a cloud-based data lake infrastructure in Azure using Snowflake, Fivetran, dbt, Azure Data Factory, and Power Automate. The focus now is getting the content in — and the real bottleneck is data readiness at the operating company level: identifying what data exists, extracting it, cleansing it, and standardising it so that it can flow into the platform.
This is a hands-on role. It requires someone comfortable working directly in spreadsheets and source systems and personally resolving data issues rather than directing others to do so. It is not a programme management, governance, or delivery-partner-management role.
About The Role
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Requirements & Discovery
- Work with Mecsia's senior leaders (finance, operations, commercial, HR) to understand the KPIs and reporting outputs required and translate these into the specific underlying data elements needed to support them.
- Work directly with each operating company to identify where relevant data sits, in which system, and in what form.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Work hands-on with operating company teams to extract the required data, including manual extraction methods where systems lack APIs (for example, spreadsheet exports).
- Where data sits with a third-party software vendor, contact the vendor directly to establish what can be extracted and how.
Data cleansing & standardisation
- Assist operating company teams in cleansing data ready for use — resolving inconsistencies, duplicates, and errors directly.
- Check that data supplied adheres to the data standards and definitions set by Mecsia. This role is responsible for checking and supporting adherence to standards, not for setting them.
Data readiness tracking
- Maintain a live tracker showing the readiness status of each required data element across every operating company, so that gaps and progress are visible at a glance.
- Flag data elements that cannot currently be sourced or standardised, and work with stakeholders to agree remediation options.
Stakeholder engagement
- Act as a day-to-day point of contact for operating company teams on data requests, working collaboratively rather than through formal escalation routes.
- Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences at the operating company level.
Essential
Key Skills & Experience
- Hands-on experience working directly with data in spreadsheets and source systems — extracting, cleansing, and reconciling data personally, not through a team.
- Comfortable working across multiple, disparate source systems, including systems with poor or no API access (e.g. manual export/import methods).
- Strong Excel / spreadsheet skills, including data cleansing, reconciliation, and basic data modelling.
- Experience translating business KPI or reporting requirements into specific, underlying data needs.
- Confident, practical communicator, able to work directly with operational and finance teams across multiple business units to extract and validate information.
- Experience working in a multi-site or multi-entity organisation, ideally with variation in systems and processes across entities.

Desirable
- Familiarity with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Azure Data Factory, Fivetran, dbt, or Power BI. This role will not build or configure these systems, but should understand how the data it prepares feeds into them.
- Experience liaising with software vendors to obtain data extracts or clarify data availability.
- Experience in the facilities management, inspection, maintenance, or engineering services sector.
Qualifications And Education
- Degree-level education in a relevant discipline (e.g. data science, business analytics, information management, or a numerate business subject) — or equivalent practical experience.
- Professional development in data or analytics is advantageous (e.g. Microsoft Power BI certifications, DAMA CDMP, or equivalent data management qualifications), but not essential.
