🎯 Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a senior-level Data Architect with strong PostgreSQL/SQL expertise and deep London Market insurance experience. You should be comfortable working across business and technical teams, modernising complex data landscapes, and defining scalable, secure, and governed enterprise data architectures.

📌 Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Data Architect with strong SQL/PostgreSQL expertise and a proven insurance domain background to design, modernise, and govern enterprise data platforms. The ideal candidate will have hands-on expertise in relational database architecture, data modelling, performance optimisation, data migration, data governance, and modernisation, along with practical knowledge of insurance data domains such as policy administration, claims, underwriting, billing, customer, broker, risk, and reinsurance.

🔧 Key Responsibilities

  • Define and own end-to-end data architecture for SQL/PostgreSQL-based platforms supporting transactional, analytical, and reporting workloads.
  • Design logical and physical data models, database schemas, data flows, integration patterns, and data migration strategies.
  • Partner with business stakeholders, Product Owners, Data Engineers, application teams, and Enterprise Architects to translate insurance requirements into scalable data solutions.
  • Lead database modernisation, optimisation, and migration initiatives involving SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and cloud-native PostgreSQL platforms.
  • Establish data architecture standards covering:
    • Data quality
    • Metadata
    • Data lineage
    • Retention
    • Security and privacy
    • Regulatory compliance
  • Review and optimise database performance, including indexing, partitioning, query design, stored procedures, and data access patterns.
  • Support data governance and master/reference data management initiatives across insurance data domains.
  • Provide architectural guidance, conduct design reviews, and provide technical leadership to engineering and delivery teams.
  • Assess existing data landscapes and define modernisation, rationalisation, and migration roadmaps.
  • Produce high-quality architecture documentation, design specifications, and Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).

✅ Must-Have Skills & Experience

  • Strong hands-on experience as a Data Architect, Database Architect, or Senior Data Modeller working on enterprise-scale data platforms.
  • Mandatory insurance domain experience, with practical understanding of areas such as:
    • Policy lifecycle
    • Claims
    • Underwriting
    • Billing
    • Customer / Account data
    • Broker / Intermediary data
    • Risk and exposure
    • Reinsurance
  • Advanced SQL expertise, including:
    • Complex query design
    • Stored procedures
    • Functions and views
    • Indexing
    • Partitioning
    • Transaction handling
    • Performance tuning
  • Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, optimisation, security, backup/recovery concepts, replication, and high-availability considerations.
  • Strong experience designing conceptual, logical, and physical data models for operational and analytical use cases.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Data warehousing
    • Data marts
    • ETL/ELT
    • Data integration
    • Data migration
  • Experience with data quality, data governance, metadata management, data lineage, access control, and data security.
  • Experience working with large, complex, and highly regulated data environments.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to communicate architecture decisions to both technical and business stakeholders.
  • London Market / London insurance experience is mandatory.

  • Experience with insurance data standards such as ACORD or equivalent canonical insurance data models.
  • Experience with cloud database platforms such as:
    • AWS Aurora PostgreSQL
    • Amazon RDS
    • Azure Database for PostgreSQL
    • Google Cloud SQL
  • Experience with SQL Server to PostgreSQL migration, database refactoring, or legacy data platform modernisation.
  • Exposure to modern data platforms such as:
    • Snowflake
    • Databricks
    • Amazon Redshift
    • Azure Synapse
    • Microsoft Fabric
  • Experience with ETL/ELT and data integration tools such as:
    • Informatica
    • Talend
    • dbt
    • Airflow
    • SSIS
    • AWS Glue
  • Understanding of insurance regulatory and compliance requirements relating to data privacy, retention, auditability, and operational resilience.
  • Experience with Master Data Management (MDM), Reference Data Management, and golden-source data design.
  • Familiarity with DevOps/DataOps practices, including:
    • CI/CD for database changes
    • Version control
    • Automated testing
    • Deployment pipelines
  • Ability to lead architecture workshops and produce high-quality architecture documentation, ADRs, data standards, and design artefacts.
