I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in data architecture within a commercial environment where data influences revenue, pricing, trading, or marketing decisions. Strong conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling skills are essential, including expertise in dimensional and event-based approaches. Hands-on experience with modern cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, AWS, Azure, or GCP is highly desirable, along with proficiency in ELT processes, APIs, streaming, batch data integration, and data contracts.
Practical skills in SQL, Python, and transformation tools like dbt are necessary to execute data modeling and transformation tasks effectively. Candidates should have experience working with large-scale consumer, digital, and transactional data, including web analytics and GA4. An understanding of data design for machine learning, artificial intelligence, and automated decision-making processes is also important. Knowledge of privacy, security, and compliance standards such as GDPR across multiple jurisdictions is required, along with the ability to communicate complex architecture concepts effectively to senior stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the target data architecture for commercial data across multiple regions, including the UK, US, and Europe.
- Define and maintain common business entities, definitions, hierarchies, keys, and data contracts across various source systems and markets to ensure data consistency and trustworthiness.
- Design and architect data products that support core functions such as pricing, revenue management, marketing measurement, forecasting, and trading.
- Develop data models for consumer, digital, financial, and operational data that connect behavioral insights, investments, sales, and performance metrics.
- Embed privacy, security, consent, data retention, and cross-border data requirements into the architecture from the outset to ensure compliance and data protection.
- Establish standards for how analytics, machine learning, AI services, and agents access structured data securely and reliably.
- Create comprehensive data models, data flow diagrams, lineage documentation, architecture decision records, and reusable design patterns for engineering and business teams.
- Review and validate architectural designs, challenge assumptions when necessary, and represent data architecture in cross-team forums to promote best practices and consistency.
