About the Role
The Affordable Housing Service is at the forefront of increasing the supply, quality and diversity of affordable homes across Somerset. Working with housing providers, developers, Homes England, local communities and colleagues across the Council, we help deliver the homes and communities that Somerset residents need.
As our Data and Business Support Officer, you will play a pivotal role in providing the data, insight and business support that underpins the service's success. You will manage key housing data and performance information, produce meaningful analysis and reports, coordinate business processes and support the effective delivery of projects and service priorities.
This varied role combines data management, performance monitoring and administrative support, helping the service make informed decisions, secure investment, monitor affordable housing delivery and continuously improve how we work. You'll work closely with colleagues and external partners to ensure information is accurate, accessible and used effectively to deliver positive housing outcomes for Somerset residents.
If you are organised, analytical and enjoy improving systems and processes while supporting a busy and ambitious team, this is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to affordable housing delivery across Somerset.
How You'll Make a Difference
- Develop and maintain data systems, dashboards and reports that support affordable housing delivery, performance monitoring and decision-making.
- Produce analysis, reports and market intelligence to inform planning, investment opportunities and service priorities.
- Provide business and administrative support to the Affordable Housing Service, helping coordinate team activities, projects, meetings and service processes.
- Work with colleagues and partners to gather, validate and interpret information, building a strong evidence base for affordable housing delivery.
- Support strategic projects, performance reporting, statutory returns and communications activity.
- Identify opportunities to improve systems, processes and ways of working, helping the team work more efficiently and effectively.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
