Data Centre Shift Engineer Job Description
Location: London
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Shift Pattern: Continental shift pattern (Days & Nights, 24/7 operation)
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically competent Shift Engineer to join our Operations team at a mission-critical data centre. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the facility's critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure, ensuring maximum availability for our customers.
Working as part of a 24/7 shift team, you will respond to alarms, perform planned preventative maintenance, manage specialist contractors, and support incident response, while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance, and customer service. This role requires an individual who thrives in a fast-paced critical environment and has a proactive approach to reliability, risk management, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor all critical electrical and mechanical systems including HV/LV, UPS, generators, chillers, CRAH/CRAC units, in-row cooling, pumps, BMS, and fire systems.
- Carry out routine plant inspections and record operating parameters.
- Investigate and respond to alarms.
- Perform planned preventative maintenance.
- Support specialist contractors.
- Diagnose faults and support incident response.
- Operate Permit to Work and LOTO procedures.
- Maintain CMMS records, shift logs, and technical reports.
- Support customer installations and audits.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Experience in a critical environment.
- Strong electrical and mechanical knowledge.
- Experience operating critical infrastructure.
- Experience using BMS and Permit to Work systems.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Desirable:
- Previous data centre experience.
- HV Authorised Person.
- Experience with Schneider, Vertiv, Stulz, or Mitsubishi equipment.
- ISO management systems.
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent.
- Desirable: HNC/HND, 18th Edition, IOSH, HV Authorised Person.
