Help Ambitious Businesses Build, Scale, and Navigate Change
Altern8 Legal was built around a belief that ambitious businesses should be able to access exceptional senior legal expertise flexibly, while experienced lawyers should have greater ownership over how, where, and with whom they work.
We provide bespoke legal solutions to our clients through our exceptional pool of senior lawyers, delivering strategic legal support in an efficient and flexible way.
Developing and operating a data centre brings together land, construction, power, finance, and complex customer relationships. Businesses need lawyers who understand how those elements connect - and who can help move projects and negotiations forward.
We are looking to connect with experienced lawyers who have worked in-house for data centre businesses or advised data centre clients in private practice, and who are interested in interim, fractional, or project-based consulting opportunities.
We are particularly interested in experience across one or more of the following areas:
- Land acquisition and development: site acquisitions, options, leases, title issues, planning and permitting, and utility rights.
- Construction and projects: design and build agreements, contractor appointments, procurement, fit-out, change control and operational contracts.
- Power and energy: grid connections, power procurement, PPAs and associated energy infrastructure.
- Commercial and customer contracts: colocation agreements, master services agreements, hyperscaler contracts, service levels and risk allocation.
- Corporate and finance: acquisitions, joint ventures, project financing and investment in data centre portfolios.
- Operational and regulatory matters: environmental obligations, sustainability, technology procurement, cybersecurity and resilience.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Typical engagements might include supporting a developer through site acquisition and construction, owning a demanding customer negotiation, providing additional capacity during expansion or investment, or simply stepping into an interim or fractional senior legal role.

This could suit lawyers from data centre operators, developers, infrastructure investors, or law firms who enjoy hands-on work, can operate independently, and are comfortable working closely with legal, development, construction, commercial and finance teams. Experience coordinating advisers across jurisdictions would also be valuable.
